Despite the fact that half of all teens suffer from pimples, and many adults can’t escape breakouts, there don’t seem to be clear or conclusive answers about causes and treatments for acne. But don’t fret: these natural ways to prevent acne are proven effective, are far cheaper and may be healthier in the long run than prescription-strength drugs.

Witch Hazel and Tea Tree Oil for Acne

Witch hazel is a liquid herbal extract that has been used for centuries in herbal medicine. As an astringent, it acts to dry the skin, foiling pimple-causing buildups of oil. Tea tree oil, another herbal treatment, works on skin in a similar way, though some people may have an allergic reaction to it. Tea tree oil was found to be as effective on acne as benzoyl peroxide, a drying agent commonly used to treat acne, though tea tree oil takes somewhat longer to take effect.

Acne and Diet

Though some early studies concluded that there is no link between acne and diet, more recent research has shown this is not true. Milk has been tentatively linked to acne, and some people find relief from acne through removing milk products from their diet alone. One study found that a low-carb diet helped to reduce acne over time, which may be due to the steady blood sugar levels of people who eat less carbohydrates, or sugars. Eating smaller meals more often also helps to keep blood sugar steady. Food sensitivities can also cause what appears to be pimples but are actually welts; many people are sensitive to soy, wheat, milk or peanuts. Try removing any suspected food from your diet to see if the acne improves.

Simple Ways to Prevent Acne

To prevent the buildup of oil on the skin, avoid hair products containing oil and pull oily hair away from the face. Take care not to touch your face during the day, and use a simple, fragrance-free soap to wash your face.

Does Makeup Cause Acne?

Anything applied to the skin can contribute to acne, so take care to choose skin products that are oil-free. Skin products marked as non-comedogenic and nonacnegenic are a better choice for pimple-producing skin.
